Jakarta: Reigning women’s singles world champion Carolina Marin of Spain enjoyed a light moment ahead of the 2015 World Championships, as she has been voted most popular foreign badminton player by Indonesian fans in the 2015 Badminton Fans Award presented by the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI). Voting period for the 2015 Badminton Fans Award began July 9th and ended in August 2nd.
Marin’s glorious achievement in relatively young age and her style of play have captivated badminton fans across the Indonesia. She defeated Olympic champion Li Xuerui to win the 2014 world championships at the age of 21, and she has already scooped up All England, Malaysia Open, and Australia Open titles in 2015. In preparation for the 2015 World Championships, she’s been spotted several times training at the PBSI facility and other badminton clubs in Jakarta.
Indonesian fans’ support undoubtedly has given her great pleasure, and winning the award must surely gave her particular personal satisfaction.
Meanwhile, Kevin Sanjaya got one surprise first-place vote as the fan’s favourite Indonesian badminton player. The 20-year-old Kevin held off other senior Indonesian players such as Liliyana Natsir, Hendra Setiawan, Mohammad Ahsan, Greysia Polii and more to surge forward to win the award.
Kevin won the 2013 world junior mixed doubles with Masita Mahmudin. He is currently focused in the men’s doubles, partnering Marcus Fernaldi Gideon. Kevin and Marcus Fernaldi have won the silver medal at the 2015 Singapore SEA Games and they have become runner-up at the 2015 Chinese Taipei Open.
“Thank you to all my supporters. This award definitely gave me a lot of motivation, and I hope I can perform better in the future,” said Kevin.
