MADRID — Olympic champion Carolina Marin has officially announced her retirement from professional badminton, bringing an end to one of the most remarkable careers in the history of the sport.

The Spanish badminton star, who won the women’s singles gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, confirmed the decision after struggling with recurring knee injuries in recent years.

At 32 years old, Carolina Marin remains the only non-Asian player in history to win an Olympic gold medal in women’s singles badminton, a record that highlights her incredible impact on the sport.

Injuries Forced Retirement Decision

Marin had initially planned to make a comeback at the European Championships in Huelva this April, which would have been a special tournament in her hometown. However, she ultimately decided not to risk further damage to her knee.

Her most recent injury occurred during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she reached the semi-finals before suffering a knee ligament injury during the match and was forced to withdraw. She had also previously missed the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to a similar knee injury.

In a message shared on social media, Marin said her badminton career has officially come to an end, even though she had hoped to say goodbye on the court in front of fans.

She admitted that, emotionally, her final match had already taken place at the Paris Olympics in 2024, even though she did not realize it at the time.

A Legendary Badminton Career

Carolina Marin leaves badminton as one of the greatest women’s singles players of all time. In addition to her Olympic gold medal in Rio, she won the BWF World Championships three times in 2014, 2015, and 2018.

Her victory in the 2018 World Championships made her the first women’s singles player in history to win three world titles, cementing her legacy as one of the legends of badminton.

Marin famously defeated India’s PV Sindhu in both the Rio Olympic final and the 2018 World Championship final, creating one of the most memorable rivalries in women’s singles badminton.

Tributes from Rivals and Friends

Following the retirement announcement, many badminton players paid tribute to Marin, including her long-time rival PV Sindhu, who shared a heartfelt message on social media thanking Marin for the battles, lessons, and friendship they shared throughout their careers.

Thailand’s former world champion Ratchanok Intanon also posted a message thanking Marin for inspiring European athletes to take badminton seriously and for the many memorable matches they played against each other over the years.

Meanwhile, former world No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying also expressed her admiration for Marin, especially for her determination to return to badminton after multiple surgeries and serious injuries.

Badminton Will Remember Carolina Marin

The Spanish Badminton Federation praised Marin for her incredible career, ambition, and relentless pursuit of excellence, saying she inspired an entire generation of badminton players, especially in Europe.

Carolina Marin not only won titles but also helped grow badminton outside Asia, proving that European players could compete at the highest level of the sport.

Her intensity, speed, fighting spirit, and never-give-up mentality made her one of the most recognizable and respected players in badminton history.

With her retirement, badminton loses one of its biggest personalities and fiercest competitors, but her legacy in badminton will remain for many years to come.
