Da Nang: Malaysia’s 15-year-old shuttler Goh Jin Wei returned to the final for second time in four weeks as she secured a 21-19, 21-14 women’s singles semi-final win over No.2 seed Rusydina Antardayu Riodingin of Indonesia at the 2015 Vietnam International Series on Saturday.
Goh Jin Wei won the Belgian International Challenge on September 12, but was beaten by compatriot Ho Yen Mei in the semi-finals of 2015 Polish International. She is looking at an uphill battle to earn her second international title when she will clash with Chen Su Yu of Taiwan on Sunday.
Adding joy to the Malaysian camp were Tan Kian Meng-Peck Yen Wei, when both shuttlers pulled off the biggest upset of the day in Da Nang on Saturday, beating top-seeded Indonesians Hafiz Faisal/Shella Devi Aulia 18-21, 22-20, 21-18 to push their way into the Vietnam International Series mixed doubles finals.
21-year-old Tan Kian Meng switched to mixed doubles from men’s singles after the 2015 Osaka International Challenge Badminton. Since then, he has been partnering Peck Yen Wei and made their maiden outing at 2015 Singapore International Series in August. Even though it’s only their second tournament together, they have shown enormous potential route to the 2015 Vietnam International Series finals.
“We got off to a slow start in the first set, but we didn’t give up. We kept alive our hopes and fought through the very close game after trailed by 14-16 in the second set,” said Kian Meng.
“We played more proactively in the decider to see off the Indonesians and advanced to our first final ever,” added Kian Meng.
“It’s going to be a tough final on Sunday. Hopefully we’ll play some good badminton and will come out on top.”
The young Malaysian mixed doubles pair will take on Rian Swastedian/Masita Mahmudin of Indonesia on Sunday.
