La Roche sur Yon: Denmark’s defending men’s champion Jan O. Jorgensen continued his fine run at the European Championships in La Roche sur Yon, France when he eliminated Rajiv Ouseph of England 21-11, 21-15 in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The top seed Jorgensen will set up an all-Danish final on Sunday against his junior Viktor Axelsen, who clinched a 21-10, 23-21 semi-final triumph over Germany’s Marc Zwiebler.
In women’s competition, World No. 1 and defending champion Carolina Marin of Spain held off a late surge from rival Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt in the first set to take the game 23-21. Marin was barely troubled in the second set as she cruised into the final with a 21-15 comfortable second set win.
The World No. 2 Spaniard will meet Scot shuttler Kirsty Gilmour in the final.
Kirsty Gilmour admitted keeping her calm at the key moments proved decisive as she clinched a spot in Sunday’s final.
The second seeded Gilmour has to dig deep before overcoming Denmark’s Anna Thea Madsen to record a 17-21, 21-18, 21-19 victory in 56 minutes.
“I am really excited, and also very tired as well,” said Gilmour.
“Staying calm and focus on one point at a time was the key to today’s victory,” added Gilmour.
