Kuala Lumpur: World No. 1 men’s singles player Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia will partner Olympic champion Zhao Yunlei of China for mixed doubles event in the Purple League tie between Petaling BC and Ampang Jaya BC on Saturday.
Although Zhao Yunlei is considered as the most successful mixed doubles player in the history of badminton, Lee Chong Wei is no stranger to mixed doubles either.
Lee had won the 2015 Perak Open and the 2012 Selangor Open mixed doubles titles partnering Vivian Hoo. Lee and his wife Wong Mew Choo were also playing as a pair in the 2015 Kuala Lumpur edition of “The Legends’ Vision”, taking on Peter Gade and Taufik Hidayat.
“I have not yet played in this season’s Purple League yet, I am looking forward to an entertaining match on Saturday” said Lee Chong Wei.
In order to prevent and to reduce the risk of injury before this year’s World Championships, Lee indicated he may not participate in Purple League’s Champions Challenge that will be held from Feb 9th to Feb 12th. He also revealed he would not defend the men’s singles title at the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament that will kicked off in Sibu, Malaysia on Jan 17th.
“I am still maintaining my training routine to stay in shape. But I am very selective about tournaments, as my focus this year will be the World Championships,” added Lee.
“For sure, I will be playing in this year’s All England, but may also be playing in German Open as a warm-up event for the All England,” said Lee.
