Sydney: Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi moved one step closer to the Australia Open women’s singles title after booking her place in the semifinals with a straight-game victory on Friday.

The top-seeded Japanese star defeated India’s Tanvi Sharma 21-14, 21-14 in the quarterfinals, producing a controlled performance to stay on course in the Super 500 badminton tournament.

Yamaguchi, one of the most experienced players left in the draw, will next face India’s third seed Pusarla V. Sindhu in a high-profile semifinal. Sindhu advanced in dominant fashion after beating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Su Yu 21-6, 21-9.

The other women’s singles semifinal will feature Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara against Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong. Okuhara defeated Chinese Taipei’s Lin Hsiang Ti 21-11, 21-10, while second seed Chochuwong ended the run of Huang Yu-Hsun 21-15, 21-15.

In men’s singles, China’s Dong Tian Yao reached the semifinals after edging Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus 22-20, 21-19 in a tight quarterfinal contest.

Indonesia’s Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah also moved into the last four with an impressive 21-7, 21-13 win over Malaysia’s Justin Hoh.

In the lower half of the draw, Indonesia’s third seed Alwi Farhan defeated Taiwan’s Lee Chia Hao 21-18, 21-15. Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan completed the semifinal lineup after coming from behind to beat China’s Hu Zhe An 21-23, 21-18, 21-13.

Sabar-Reza, Liang-Wang Move Into Men’s Doubles Semifinals

In men’s doubles, Indonesia’s Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani continued their strong campaign by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Fang-Chih Lee and Fang-Jen Lee 21-17, 21-11.

They will next face Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Liu Kuang Heng, who advanced after India’s Hariharan Amsakarunan and M. R. Arjun retired. Chen and Liu were leading 21-19, 16-9 when the match ended.

China will also have strong representation in the other semifinal. Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi defeated Huang Di and Liu Yang 21-7, 21-16, while second seeds Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang beat Korea’s Kang Min Hyuk and Ki Dong Ju 21-19, 21-9.

In women’s doubles, China’s top seeds Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian survived a three-game test against Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ya Ching and Sung Yu-Hsuan, winning 21-13, 18-21, 21-15.

They will meet Indonesia’s Rachel Allessya Rose and Febi Setianingrum in the semifinals. The Indonesian fifth seeds defeated Bulgaria’s Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva 21-15, 21-12.

Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Jhih Yun also reached the last four after beating China’s Luo Yi and Wang Ting Ge 21-9, 12-21, 21-9.

They will face Indonesia’s Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, who ended the run of Malaysia’s Low Zi Yu and Noraqilah Maisarah 21-13, 21-17.

They will take on the United States pair Presley Smith and Jennie Gai, who defeated Chinese Taipei’s Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang 21-16, 21-11.

The other semifinal will feature Thailand’s Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat against China’s Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui.

Ruttanapak and Jhenicha beat Hong Kong’s Chan Yin Chak and Ng Tsz Yau 21-15, 21-19, while second seeds Guo and Chen defeated Indonesia’s Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja 21-11, 21-14.
