Sydney — Malaysia’s top mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei have taken a major step toward ending their World Tour title drought this season after booking their place in the 2025 Australian Open final on Saturday.

The world No. 4 pair produced a composed and strategic display to defeat Thailand’s new partnership Pakkapon Teeraratsakul/Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-16, 21-14 in a 50-minute semi-final at Sydney Olympic Park.

Watch highlights of Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei vs. Pakkapon Teeraratsakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai in 2025 Australian Open semi-final:

A Confident Start, Then a Heart-Stopping Twist

The Malaysians controlled the opening game from start to finish, but the second game delivered unexpected drama.

Leading 12–3, Tang Jie–Ee Wei suddenly lost rhythm, allowing the Thai pair to reel in 10 straight points and level the score at 13–13.

However, the Malaysians held their nerve, regrouped quickly, and ended the Thai comeback at 14—closing the match with a composed push to the finish line.

The win marks their first-ever meeting with the Thai duo, who only teamed up earlier this year.

Who Awaits in the Final?

Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei will face the Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Pasaribu of Indonesia in the final.

The Malaysians enter the final seeking their first BWF World Tour title of 2025, despite having produced the biggest triumph of their careers earlier this year by winning the World Championships in Paris.

A Season of “Almost There” Moments

Although they lifted the world title in August, World Tour success has narrowly eluded them this year:

Their best results so far:

  • Runner-up – China Masters

  • Six semi-finals:
Denmark Open, Macau Open, Japan Open, Indonesia Open, India Open, Malaysia Open

Reaching the Australian Open final is therefore not only timely—it may finally be the breakthrough they’ve been hunting all season.

Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Crash Out in Men’s Doubles Semi-Final

Malaysia’s other semifinal hope in Sydney ended in heartbreak.

Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, seeded second, were dismantled 21-15, 21-15 by Indonesia’s rising pair Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin in a 42-minute upset.

The Malaysians held strong early in both games, but stalled at 15 in each game as the young Indonesians surged ahead with sharper attack and superior pace.

The defeat compounded their disappointment after failing to qualify for the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou.

Indonesia’s Youngsters on Fire

Remarkably, the Indonesian pair defeated three Malaysian pairs in one tournament to reach the final:

  • Choong Hon Jian/Muhammad Haikal (R2)

  • Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun (QF)

  • Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin (SF)

Their explosive run makes them one of the most talked-about men’s doubles breakthroughs of the week.

A Season of Highs & Lows for Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin

The pair started 2025 strong by winning the India Open, but were unable to maintain consistency. Missing the World Tour Finals is a major blow compared to last season’s achievements:

  • Champions at Japan Open, China Open, Arctic Open

  • Runners-up at the World Tour Finals

  • Briefly ranked World No. 1 in May
