KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia has received a potential boost ahead of the 2026 Thomas Cup after England confirmed that their top men’s doubles pair Sean Vendy and Ben Lane will not be competing in the tournament.
The Thomas Cup will be held in Horsens, Denmark next month, where Malaysia has been drawn in Group B alongside Japan, England, and Finland.
England Missing Their Strongest Men’s Doubles Pair
Although Malaysia is expected to be stronger on paper against England, the pair of Sean Vendy and Ben Lane had been a difficult opponent for Malaysian men’s doubles pairs in recent years.
The English pair, currently ranked world No. 15, previously defeated world No. 2 Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the Arctic Open final last October in a three-game match, winning 21-18, 25-27, 21-17 and denying Malaysia the title.
They have also beaten former world No. 1 pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin twice, including at the Malaysia Open earlier this year.
Among Malaysia’s top pairs, only Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun have managed to defeat Vendy and Lane in international competition.
Aaron Chia Remains Focused
Despite the absence of England’s top men’s doubles pair, Malaysia’s Aaron Chia remains cautious and emphasized that the team cannot underestimate any opponent in the Thomas Cup.
He said that regardless of who England fields, the most important thing for Malaysia is to secure the overall team victory.
While acknowledging that Vendy and Lane are not easy opponents, Aaron believes Malaysia still has the overall advantage in terms of team strength.
England Sending New Combinations
In addition to Vendy and Lane, England will also be missing several key players from their squad, including Rory Easton, Callum Hemming, and Estelle Van Leeuwen.
Instead, England is expected to field several new doubles combinations, including Sam Jones and Oliver Butler, as well as Harry Wakefield and Robin Harper.
The absence of several experienced players could reduce England’s overall strength in the team competition.
Malaysia Final Thomas Cup Squad To Be Confirmed After Asian Championships
Meanwhile, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will only announce the final 10-player squad for the Thomas Cup after the Badminton Asia Championships, which will be held in Ningbo, China from April 7 to April 12.
The Asian Championships will likely play a role in determining the final lineup for Malaysia’s Thomas Cup team.
Malaysia will be aiming to qualify from Group B and potentially challenge strong teams like Japan as they pursue success in the prestigious team badminton tournament.
