Birmingham: Jonatan Christie ends Indonesia’s men’s singles title drought at the prestigious All England Open tournament after three decades of waiting.

In Sunday’s final, Jonatan defeated compatriot Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in straight games, 21-15, 21-14, in just 54 minutes.

Highlights of Jonatan Christie vs. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the 2024 All-England final:

Not only is this the first time an Indonesian men’s singles player has won the All-England since Hariyanto Arbi claimed the title in 1994, but it also marks the first time Christie has won the BWF Super 1000 tournament.

The first game was quite intense as both players fiercely contested for every point. At 10-17, both were engaged in the longest rally of the first game, with 37 shots, which was won by Ginting as he scored three consecutive points, narrowing the gap with Christie to 13-17.

Christie eventually managed to clinch the first game 21-15 in just 29 minutes.

Before the start of the second game, Ginting was seen seeking medical assistance for a slight finger injury. However, this did not dampen his determination to vie for the All-England title against Christie.

The second game opened with Ginting taking the first point with a cross-court shot. It didn’t take long for Christie to equalize and turn the tide in his favor.

Ginting’s powerful smashes proved capable of causing problems for Christie, but several of his shots went out of bounds or got caught in the net, allowing Jonatan to maintain a lead of 18-14.

In this crucial moment, Christie didn’t lose focus and went on to win this oldest badminton tournament in 55 minutes.

“I remember how both of us entered the national team. We shared a room for about six or seven years. Anthony is a humble and cheerful person. We are glad to share this experience,” said Christie after the match.

“This is a proud moment for both of us and for the Indonesian men’s singles team,” Christie added.
