Jakarta: The World No. 7 Lee Zii Jia from Malaysia has successfully secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Indonesia Open after a tough second-round battle against China’s World No. 19 Weng Hong Yang.

In the match at Istora Senayan, Lee faced a strong challenge and narrowly lost the first set 20-22.

However, Lee Zii Jia showcased his prowess by making a stunning comeback, defeating Weng 21-9 in the second set before sealing the victory 21-16 in the deciding set, thus confirming his advancement to the quarterfinals.

Awaiting Lee in the last eight is the 2023 world champion, Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand, who advanced to the quarterfinals in style after defeating India’s Priyanshu Rajawat 21-10, 21-17.

The last time Lee faced Vitidsarn was in the third round of the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022, where the 26-year-old Malaysian emerged victorious 10-21, 21-19, 21-6.

Simultaneously, Malaysia’s World No. 13 women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan/M. Thinaah also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating the host pair Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti 21-18, 21-19 in the second round. They will face the World No. 1 pair Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan from China next.

Additionally, the World No. 21 mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing also secured a spot in the quarterfinals after overcoming the Danish pair Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Boje 15-21, 23-21, 21-14.

Tan/Lai will meet the eighth-seeded Kim Won Ho/Jeong Na Eun from South Korea on Friday.
