Vantaa, Finland: Lee Zii Jia will begin his 2026 Arctic Open campaign in qualifying against Japan’s Minoru Koga as the Malaysian men’s singles player looks for a fresh start on the European badminton circuit.

The BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament will be held from October 6 to 11 in Vantaa, Finland, with total prize money of US$500,000.

Coming immediately after the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, the tournament will be missing several leading players from China, Japan and South Korea who have opted not to compete, creating opportunities for players further down the entry list.

Lee Zii Jia Gets Arctic Open Opportunity

Lee was initially outside the main field but moved into the tournament following a number of withdrawals.

He will start from the qualifying draw, where the relatively small men’s singles entry means he needs only one victory to secure a place in the main draw.

His opponent will be Minoru Koga of Japan.

  • Qualifying: Lee Zii Jia (Malaysia) vs Minoru Koga (Japan)
  • Tournament: 2026 Arctic Open
  • Level: BWF World Tour Super 500
  • Dates: October 6-11, 2026
  • Location: Vantaa, Finland

Lee will be hoping to rediscover his rhythm after another difficult outing at the Vietnam Open in September, where his campaign ended early.

Dong Tian Yao Could Await Lee Zii Jia in Main Draw

If Lee defeats Koga and qualifies for the main draw, he could face China’s Dong Tian Yao in the opening round.

A further victory could potentially bring a meeting with Chinese Taipei’s Su Li Yang or Lin Chun-Yi, depending on how that section of the draw develops.

The Arctic Open therefore offers Lee an opportunity to build competitive momentum, although the level of opposition will rise quickly if he makes it through qualifying.

Kunlavut Vitidsarn Continues After Asian Games Success

One notable player who has chosen not to take a break after the Asian Games is Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

Fresh from winning Thailand’s first Asian Games individual badminton gold medal, Kunlavut is entered in the Arctic Open and will begin his campaign against a qualifier.

Five Malaysian Mixed Doubles Pairs in the Draw

Malaysia will have a strong presence in mixed doubles, with five pairs scheduled to compete.

One of the most interesting first-round matches will be an all-Malaysian clash between independent pair Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing and the temporary national combination of Chen Tang Jie-Chan Wen Tse.

The winner could then face China’s world No. 1 combination Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping in the second round.

  • Hoo Pang Ron/Lai Pei Jing (Malaysia) vs Chen Tang Jie/Chan Wen Tse (Malaysia)

Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie will start against England’s Samuel Jones and Lizzie Tolman.

If the Malaysians advance, they could next meet Thailand’s Pakkapon TeeraratSakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, with a quarterfinal place at stake.

  • Goh Soon Huat/Lai Shevon Jemie (Malaysia) vs Samuel Jones/Lizzie Tolman (England)
  • Jimmy Wong/Cheng Su Yin (Malaysia) vs qualifier
  • Wong Tien Ci/Lim Chiew Sien (Malaysia) vs Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Supissara Paewsampran (Thailand)

Aaron Tai-Yap Roy King Face Nur Azriyn-Tan Wee Kiong

Malaysia also has three men’s doubles combinations in the opening round.

Aaron Tai and Yap Roy King will face fellow Malaysians Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong in another domestic matchup.

  • Aaron Tai/Yap Roy King (Malaysia) vs Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub/Tan Wee Kiong (Malaysia)
  • Chia Weijie/Teo Ee Yi (Malaysia) vs qualifier

The all-Malaysian encounter guarantees at least one Malaysian pair will move forward from that section of the draw.

No Malaysian Entries in Women’s Singles or Women’s Doubles

Malaysia will not have representatives in either women’s singles or women’s doubles at this year’s Arctic Open.

With the tournament beginning only days after the Asian Games, several countries have also chosen to rest leading players, giving the Super 500 event a noticeably different field from the recent competition in Aichi-Nagoya.

For Lee Zii Jia, however, Finland offers something valuable: another opportunity to compete, regain confidence and try to rebuild momentum as the European leg of the badminton season begins.
