Vantaa, Finland: Yap Roy King admits even he was surprised by how naturally his partnership with Aaron Tai clicked after the Malaysian pair captured the men’s doubles title at the 2026 Arctic Open.

Competing together in a BWF World Tour tournament for the first time, Yap and Aaron produced a breakthrough week in Finland and finished it by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Lai Po Yu and Tsai Fu Cheng 21-19, 21-19 in Sunday’s final.

For Yap, there was no complicated explanation behind their immediate success.

“I don’t think there was any special secret. It was probably just the chemistry between us,” Yap said.

Yap Roy King: We Suddenly Clicked in Competition

What surprised Yap most was that the partnership appeared even stronger during competition than it had in training.

“I don’t really know why we were able to combine so well. In training, it didn’t feel like we had reached this level, but once we started competing, everything suddenly clicked.”

The pair entered the Arctic Open ranked world No. 348 as a combination, but their performances suggested a partnership far more settled than the ranking indicated.

Yap said constant communication also played an important role. During each match, the two reminded each other to stay focused on their individual responsibilities rather than trying to do too much.

First World Tour Tournament Together Ends With Super 500 Title

Before arriving in Finland, Yap and Aaron had only been paired temporarily earlier in the year at the Asian Team Championships.

The Arctic Open was therefore their first opportunity to test the combination across a full BWF World Tour tournament.

The result could hardly have been better.

In the final, the Malaysians needed just 41 minutes to overcome world No. 60 Lai Po Yu and Tsai Fu Cheng 21-19, 21-19 and claim the Super 500 championship.

  • Champions: Yap Roy King/Aaron Tai of Malaysia
  • Runners-up: Lai Po Yu/Tsai Fu Cheng of Chinese Taipei
  • Score: 21-19, 21-19
  • Duration: 41 minutes
  • Tournament: 2026 Arctic Open, BWF World Tour Super 500

Aaron Tai-Yap Roy King Partnership Delivers Immediate Reward

The Malaysian pair also completed the tournament without dropping a game, an impressive achievement for a combination with so little competitive experience together.

Their ability to find an effective rhythm immediately has given Malaysia another intriguing option in men’s doubles, particularly as the national coaching team continues experimenting with different partnerships.

For Yap, however, the key lesson from Finland was simpler: sometimes a partnership develops fastest when both players understand their roles and trust each other on court.

US$39,500 Prize for Arctic Open Champions

Yap and Aaron collected US$39,500, approximately RM141,460, for winning the men’s doubles title.

More important than the prize money is the confidence generated by winning a Super 500 championship in their first World Tour appearance as a pair.

What began as another experimental Malaysian badminton combination has now produced a title immediately, giving Yap Roy King and Aaron Tai a strong foundation to build on in their upcoming tournaments.
