Germany: Malaysia enjoyed a strong showing in mixed doubles at the German Open, with two pairs booking their places in the second round at the Westenergie Sporthalle.

Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Jemie Lai Cruise Through

Fifth seeds Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai required just 26 minutes to secure a straight-games victory over the Netherlands duo Brian Wassink and Debora Jille, winning 21-15, 21-8.

It was their first meeting, and the world No. 11 Malaysian pair quickly asserted control. After a tight start in the opening game, Goh and Shevon pulled away following a 3-3 tie and never looked back, sealing the first game 21-15.

The second game saw an even more dominant display. The Malaysian husband-and-wife partnership stormed to a six-point lead at the start, dictating pace and forcing errors before closing out the match convincingly.

They will next face Sweden’s Filip Karlborg and Tilda Sjoo for a place in the quarterfinals.

Jimmy Wong–Lai Pei Jing Produce Comeback Win

Another Malaysian mixed doubles pair, Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing, delivered one of the most dramatic performances of the day. After dropping the opening game to Denmark’s Kristoffer Kolding and Mette Werge, the Malaysians mounted a strong comeback to win 16-21, 21-17, 21-17.

Jimmy and Pei Jing were slow to settle early on, allowing the Danish pair to race ahead with an 8-0 run in the first game. Despite narrowing the gap late in the set, they could not prevent the Danes from taking the early lead.

The second game was tightly contested, with both sides trading points. Trailing 11-15 at one stage, the Malaysians produced a remarkable 10-2 surge to seize control and level the match.

In the deciding game, momentum shifted several times before Jimmy and Pei Jing gained the upper hand after a 6-6 tie. They maintained composure down the stretch to complete the turnaround and advance.

They will now take on Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh and Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn, who also needed three games to progress.

Singles Results: Mixed Fortunes for Malaysia

In men’s singles, Malaysia’s Justin Hoh was unable to move beyond the opening round. The 21-year-old fell to Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu 17-21, 21-12, 8-21.

After a slow start in the first game, Justin rallied strongly in the second to force a decider. However, Lee regained control in the third game to seal victory and set up a second-round clash with Japan’s Minoru Koga.

In women’s singles, Malaysia’s Karupathevan Letshanaa battled hard but lost in three games to fourth seed Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan, 9-21, 21-15, 11-21. Miyazaki will next face Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour.
