Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s National Doubles Coaching Director Rexy Mainaky has revealed that preparations for the 2026 Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark (April 24 – May 3) have been underway since late last year.

According to Rexy, the planning phase did not begin this season but started as early as November, with detailed discussions covering technical preparation, logistics, and player welfare.

“We didn’t just start this year. Since November or early December, we have already discussed all the important elements for the Thomas Cup training camps,” Rexy explained.

Following the Paris Olympics Model

In a significant development for Malaysian badminton, Rexy confirmed that the preparation strategy for the Thomas Cup will closely mirror the structured approach used during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games campaign.

This includes deploying a comprehensive support team to Denmark to ensure players remain in peak physical and mental condition throughout the tournament.

“We discussed replicating what we implemented during the Olympic camp in Paris. We will bring a full support system, including a chef and nutritionist, to carefully manage the players’ diet and recovery,” he said.

Nutrition and Recovery as Performance Keys

Modern elite badminton demands more than tactical excellence. Rexy emphasized that nutrition, recovery, and sports science will play a decisive role in Malaysia’s Thomas Cup performance.

By closely monitoring dietary intake and recovery protocols, the coaching team aims to reduce fatigue and optimize match-day sharpness — critical factors in high-intensity team badminton tournaments.

Early Arrival and High-Level Sparring

The Malaysian squad is scheduled to depart for Denmark around April 14, shortly after the Badminton Asia Championships. Arriving early allows the team to adapt to European conditions and complete final-stage preparations.

In addition, the coaching staff plans to organize quality sparring sessions to maintain competitive rhythm before the Thomas Cup begins.

“We will head to Denmark early to fine-tune preparations. The focus is to ensure players remain competitive and confident going into the tournament,” Rexy added.

Malaysia’s Ambition in Team Badminton

With a structured Olympic-style preparation plan, Malaysia aims to strengthen its position in international badminton and mount a serious challenge at the Thomas Cup — one of the sport’s most prestigious team championships.

As the tournament approaches, this strategic approach reflects Malaysia’s commitment to elevating its badminton standards on the world stage.
