Shi Yuqi Wins, China Secures Three Titles at French Open

Paris: The reigning world champion, Kunlavut Vitidsarn, finally regained his form as he fiercely contested against Shi Yuqi in the men’s singles final of the 2024 French Open. However, Shi Yuqi remained calm and collected, ultimately securing victory, claiming his second title at this event and marking his second BWF World Tour title of 2024.

China’s world No. 2 men’s singles player, Shi Yuqi, continued his impressive record of reaching the final in every tournament he participated in this year, successfully advancing to the final of the French Open this week. In the final, he defeated the world No. 8 and Thai world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn with scores of 22-20, 21-19.

This marks Shi Yuqi’s third tournament appearance this year. He finished as the runner-up in the first tournament, the Malaysia Super 1000, and went on to win the second tournament, the India Super 750. Now, he adds another championship to his list with the French Open title.

This also marks Shi Yuqi’s third appearance in the French Open final. He first advanced to the final and won the title in 2016, followed by a runner-up finish in 2018.

With victories in the finals by Shi Yuqi, China also won the women’s doubles via Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan, and Feng Yanzhe/Huang Dongping also emerged victorious.

World No. 1 champions Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan came back from 14-20 in the third set to remarkably defeat the World No. 6 Japanese pair Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida with scores of 21-12, 19-21, 24-22 in 88 minutes. This marked their 12th win in their 15th meeting and maintained an unbeaten streak in their last seven encounters.

Highlights of Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan vs. Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida in the French Open final:

Ranked fourth in the world, Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping faced the third-ranked Korean world champions, Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yu Jung 21-16, 21-16, securing their first title of the year.

In women’s singles, An Se Young of Korea came back from dropping the first game to beat Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 18-21, 21-13, 21-10 to win her second title of the year after winning the Malaysia Open in January. This was also An’s second French Open title after she won it in 2019.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty of India finally won their first title of 2024 by beating Lee Jhe-Huei/Yang Po-Hsuan of Taiwan 21-11, 21-17.
