New Delhi: In the 2024 India Open men’s singles final, China’s world No. 2 Shi Yuqi defeated Hong Kong’s dark horse Lee Cheuk Yiu with scores of 23-21 and 21-17. The victory also ended Shi’s record of five consecutive losses in finals and also securing his first title of the 2024 season.

Highlight of Shi Yuqi vs. Lee Cheuk Yiu in the 2024 India Open final:

Since last year’s All England Open, Asian Games, Kumamoto Masters Japan, and BWF World Tour Finals, all the way to this year’s Malaysia Open, Shi Yuqi has consistently been able to reach the finals but always settled for the runner-up position. Facing the dark horse Lee Cheuk Yiu in this tournament, Shi Yuqi found the first game challenging before winning 23-21. The second game saw a strong fight from both Shi and Lee until 10-10. However, Shi steadied himself, launched an 8-1 offensive, and secured victory 21-17.

This was Shi’s first BWF World Tour title after winning the Australian Open in November 2022, marking his second victory in the India Open since 2018. Additionally, he successfully prevented China from facing the embarrassment of zero titles in this edition of the India Open.

In the mixed doubles final, the seventh-seeded Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai secured the championship by defeating the fifth-seeded Chinese pair Jiang Zhen Bang/Wei Ya Xin with scores of 21-16 in both games. This victory set a historic record for Thailand, as Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai became the first Thai mixed doubles champions in the 51-year history of the India Open.

In the last match of the day, the men’s doubles final, South Korean world champions Kang Min Hyuk/Seo Seung Jae staged a comeback with scores of 15-21, 21-11, 21-18 against the Asian champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty from the host country India. They became the second South Korean men’s doubles pair to win the India Open since Park Joo Bong/Kim Moon Soo won it 39 years ago.
