Kuala Lumpur: The influence of coach Wong Tat Meng since mid-2022 has been instrumental in transforming Malaysia’s World No. 8 Lee Zii Jia, into a more well-rounded competitor.

Under Wong’s guidance, Lee Zii Jia has seen a revival in his performance, achieving multiple successes, including securing a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics for the second time.

Lee credits Wong Tat Meng with helping him develop a more versatile game, incorporating a broader range of skills and strategies on the court.

“With Tat Meng as my head coach, he has worked on making me a more versatile player. Previously, I lacked a good rally game and strong defense. Now, I feel more comfortable and am not solely relying on smashes.”

“Tat Meng has significantly contributed to my growth. The training is intense, but we also focus on relaxation, which is crucial as we prepare for the Olympics.”

“I am now enjoying the game more, rekindling my love for badminton, and I hope to carry this positive energy and spirit to the Olympics,” said Lee.

In his debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Lee Zii Jia lost in the Round of 16 to his idol, China’s Chen Long 14-21, 21-9, 14-21. This experience has been invaluable for his development.

“Qualifying for the Olympics again is a huge relief and a testament to the hard work we’ve put in. Losing to Chen Long, who went on to win the silver medal in Tokyo, taught me a lot about managing the pressures of the Olympics.”

Wong Tat Meng’s coaching has not only enhanced Lee Zii Jia’s technical abilities but also his mental approach to the game, helping him become a more complete player.
