KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19  -- National Paralympic shuttlers put up a smashing performance to emerge overall champions, winning eight gold, six silver, 10 bronze from the 20 gold medals offered in the Asean Para Games (KL 09) badminton competition that ended at the Bukit Kiara Sports Centre Wednesday.

Malaysian head coach Moe Chin Kiat said the eight gold medal haul had exceeded their earlier prediction of six gold medals.

"Winning eight gold medals showed that our players were more determined than before to win in their respective events. They have performed beyond expectation," he said.

The eight gold medals came through Shaari Zulkafli (men's singles BMW2), Cheah Liek Hou (men's singles BMSTU5), Cheah Liek Hou-Suhaili Laiman (men's doubles BMSTU5), Madzlan Saibon-Mohd Fairuz Ahja (men's doubles BMW3), Jasmi Tegol-Md Rahdi Juhary (men's doubles BMSTL1), Nabila Ahmad Sharif (women's singles BMSTL2), Nabila Ahmad Sharif-Nor Azlin Sulaiman (women's doubles BMSTL3) and Hairil Fozi Saaba-Nabila Ahmad Sharif (mixed doubles BMSTL).

Vietnam with 5 gold, 5 silver, 6 bronze, finished a surprise second overall while Indonesia with a 4-3-1 tally finished third ahead of Thailand with 3-5-9.
