Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian badminton achieved a historic breakthrough as two men’s doubles pairs—Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik—now occupy the top two spots in the latest BWF World Rankings, marking the first time in national history that Malaysia commands both the No.1 and No.2 positions simultaneously.

Despite an early exit at the 2025 Indonesia Open, Olympic bronze medalists and former World Champions Aaron and Wooi Yik ascended to World No.2. Their rise was aided by the slip of Denmark’s Kim Astrup–Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, who failed to defend semifinal points from the previous year’s Jakarta campaign.

Meanwhile, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin maintained their grip on World No.1, a position they secured two weeks ago after overtaking the same Danish pair. Their steady performance and recent title runs have propelled them to the top, reinforcing Malaysia’s rising dominance in men’s doubles badminton.

Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles See Record Highs Too
In women’s doubles, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah continue to climb, now reaching a career-best World No.3 ranking. This is the highest standing for a Malaysian women’s pair since Chin Eei Hui–Wong Pei Tty topped the global rankings back in 2009.

Should Pearly-Thinaah win next month’s Japan Open, they stand a chance to surpass Japan’s own Chiharu Shida–Nami Matsuyama to take the No.2 spot.

In men’s doubles, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun held steady at World No.7, while Malaysia’s top mixed doubles team Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei retained their World No.4 position after advancing to the semifinals in Indonesia. Their consistent performances have kept them at the forefront of Malaysian badminton excellence.
