BANGKOK: Malaysia’s professional men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani overcame a tough challenge from Scotland’s Grimley twins to secure a place in the semifinals of the 2026 Thailand Open.

The third seeds were pushed hard before eventually defeating Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley 19-21, 21-15, 21-8 in a 50-minute quarterfinal clash at Bangkok’s Nimibutr Stadium.

Scottish Twins Trouble Malaysian Pair Early

Sze Fei and Izzuddin started brightly in the opening game as both pairs exchanged points in fast-paced rallies.

However, several unforced errors late in the game allowed the Scottish brothers to gain momentum and narrowly steal the opener 21-19.

The Grimley twins showed excellent defensive discipline and flat attacking exchanges, causing problems for the Malaysian duo during crucial moments.

Malaysia Pair Respond Strongly

After losing the first game, Sze Fei and Izzuddin raised their level significantly in the second.

The Malaysian pair became more aggressive around the net while improving their court coverage and attacking combinations.

The tactical adjustment quickly shifted the momentum, allowing them to take the second game 21-15 and force a decider.

Dominant Finish Sends Sze Fei-Izzuddin Into Semifinals

Once momentum swung in their favor, the Malaysians completely controlled the third game.

Sze Fei and Izzuddin dictated the tempo from the opening rallies, applying relentless pressure with sharp smashes and quick interceptions.

The Grimley brothers struggled to keep pace as the Malaysian pair pulled away comfortably before sealing the match 21-8.

The strong finish highlighted the experience and composure of Sze Fei and Izzuddin, especially after recovering from a difficult opening game.

Semifinal Clash Against Satwik-Chirag Awaits

The Malaysians will now face India’s top seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in the semifinals.

The Indian pair advanced after defeating another Malaysian combination, Bryan Goonting and Muhammad Haikal Nazri, in the earlier round.

The upcoming semifinal is expected to be one of the biggest matches of the tournament, featuring two of the world’s top attacking men’s doubles pairs.

Positive Momentum Continues for Malaysian Duo

The semifinal appearance continues the strong momentum built by Sze Fei and Izzuddin this season.

Earlier this year, the independent Malaysian pair captured the Indonesia Masters Super 500 title, reinforcing their status as one of the fastest-rising combinations on the BWF World Tour.

Their recent performances have also strengthened Malaysia’s already impressive men’s doubles department, which remains one of the country’s biggest strengths in international badminton.

Thailand Open Important Ahead of Malaysia Masters

The Thailand Open serves as a key preparation event ahead of next week’s Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur.

Strong performances in Bangkok could provide valuable ranking points and confidence for players heading into the home tournament.

For Sze Fei and Izzuddin, reaching another semifinal further demonstrates their growing consistency against top international opponents.

This latest badminton news update highlights another impressive comeback victory by Malaysia’s top men’s doubles stars at the Thailand Open 2026.
