Lee Chong Wei spearheads Malaysian challenge at Malaysia Open

Kuala Lumpur: More than 260 players from all over the world, including badminton powerhouses such as China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan, will play in the June 26th to July 1st Malaysia Open at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia.

The secretary-general of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Ng Chin Chai believed Malaysian badminton fans are able to enjoy heated competition and spirited play as the tournament will feature a lot of top players such as Lee Chong Wei, Viktor Axelsen, Chen Long, and Lin Dan.

“Our players would have the home-court advantage and strong support from the Malaysian fans,” said Ng.

“We really hope the Malaysian fans will attend the tournament to show their support before the Malaysian players,” added Ng.

Malaysian badminton superstar Lee Chong Wei is bidding for his 12th Malaysia Open title has been handed a tough draw in this year’s edition as he was drawn in the top half alongside current world No 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, Olympic champion Chen Long of China, together with the defending champion and five-time world champion Lin Dan.

In addition to Lee, last week’s US Open mixed doubles winners Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying are also looking to continue their momentum at Malaysia Open.

“Winning the US Open definitely gave us a huge boost of confident ahead of the Malaysia Open,” said Chan.

The Malaysia Open is categorized as a Badminton World Federation Super 750 level tournament and offers a total prize money of US$700,000 (RM2.803 million).
