Kuala Lumpur: Former World No. 1 men’s singles player Lee Chong Wei who announced his retirement from badminton on June 13, 2019, will make a return to an exhibition badminton match – “The Grand Match” to be held at the Arena of Stars in Genting Highlands on December 28, 2019.
The event organizers – Ampang Jaya Badminton Club (AJBC) revealed that Lee will be joined by Rio Olympic mixed doubles silver medalists Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying, the 2018 Asian Games winter Jonatan Christie of Indonesia and the 2016 Malaysian Masters finalist Iskandar Zulkarnain of Malaysia at the exhibition match.
According AJBC team manager Ho Khek Mong said the club and its sponsor were happy that Lee Chong Wei has agreed to take part in the event.
“Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei has agreed to play the exhibition match, and it’s going to be a rare opportunity and our sponsors were all excited about this,” said Ho.
“I think everyone has been missing Datuk Lee Chong Wei, because the last time he played was in the in the 2018 Indonesia Open semi-finals,” added Ho.
Depends on Lee’s body condition, if he is fit enough, he could be playing in the men’s singles event, otherwise, he would play in the doubles event.
The Grand Match event has ticket prices ranging from RM168, RM218, RM288, RM388, RM688 (VIP) and RM888 (Meet and Greet).
