Goh Jin Wei Advances to Orleans Masters Quarters, Cheam June Wei Exits

Orleans: Malaysian former World Junior Champion, Goh Jin Wei, defeated Aliye Demirbag of Turkey 21-9, 21-16 on Thursday to advance to the Orleans Masters quarter-finals.

She will face last week’s All England finalist, No. 1 seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand next.

India’s No. 4 seed Saina Nehwal, who pulled out of the All England first round last week due to a thigh injury, was made to work before seeing off Marie Batomene of France 18-21, 21-15, 21-10.

The 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist from India will play Iris Wang of the USA in the quarter-finals.

In a men’s singles third round match between No. 1 seed Kidambi Srikanth of India and unseeded Cheam June Wei of Malaysia, even though the Malaysian was on the verge of forcing a decider by holding a 20-19 game point advantage in the second set, but the seasoned competitor from India held his nerve to finish the match 21-17, 22-20 in 45 minutes.

The former World No. 1 from India who is currently ranked No. 20 in BWF Race to Tokyo ranking, behind teammates Sai B. Praneeth (ranked No. 13), will try to pick up some valuable points for Olympic qualification when he faces Toma Junior Popov from France on Friday.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair, Wong Tien Ci/Lim Chiew Sien put up a strong fight but was no match to Max Flynn/Jessica Pugh of England, losing their second-round battle 21-23, 20-22 in 39 minutes.
