Jakarta: The 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s doubles gold medalist – Greysia Polii has announced she will officially retire from badminton on June 12 – the final day of the 2022 Indonesia Masters.

“In my badminton career, I first want to be thankful for everything that I was able to achieve,” said Polii.

“I’ve been wanting to retire for a very long time. I mean, when I experienced the incident in 2012, I already wanted to retire at that time,” explained Polii.

Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari were disqualified at the 2012 London Olympics along with one Chinese and two Korean women’s doubles pairs for not giving their best effort on the court.

“I chose to play badminton when I was a kid without knowing what was ahead of me, but it ended up as something I love. I would like to thank my coach, Eng Hian, and my sponsors,” added Polii.

“I also thank PBSI which I’ve been with for the past 19 years. Not only the current management team but also all previous PBSI leaders who had encouraged and helped us to become a champion” continued Polii.

Meanwhile, PBSI was very supportive of Polii’s decision and hoped she could still contribute to the sport after her retirement.

“First of all, I would like to thank Greysia for her achievements and dedication to Indonesian badminton. When PBSI initially heard that there was a plan for this, we really appreciated and supported it because Greysia was indeed a very extraordinary badminton player for PBSI,” said Alex Tirta – an officer from PBSI.

“Greysia has been with PBSI for 19 years, it’s a long time. I hope she can be an example, a role model for our juniors, and I hope Greysia will continue to work in the sport of badminton,” added Tirta.
