Paris: Lee Zii Jia, the 2021 All England champion, was defeated in a surprising upset by world no. 33 young Danish player Magnus Johannesen at the 2024 Yonex French Open on Wednesday

The 22-year-old Johannesen, dominated the match against the world no. 10 Lee, winning in straight sets 21-15, 21-19. European badminton fans were impressed by Johannesen’s exceptional performance, making this a significant win for the young Dane.

In another men’s singles match, India’s Kidambi Srikanth, ranked 24th in the world, faced a tough challenge against the world no. 14 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. In a thrilling encounter that lasted over an hour, Srikanth displayed tactical brilliance to win in three sets 21-15, 20-22, 21-8. This win narrowed their head-to-head record to 3-6.

The women’s doubles first round saw Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan were defeated by Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu in the first round. The Chinese pair won the match in three sets, 18-21, 21-16, 21-12. This was a disappointing loss for the Malaysian pair, who were hoping to reclaim the title they won in 2022.

In another intense first-round match, India’s PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, also had a close battle against Canada’s Michelle Li. The Indian shuttler showcased her resilience and fighting spirit to come back from a deficit and win in a marathon match lasting 80 minutes 20-22, 22-20, 21-19.
