The Commonwealth Games Federation’s president, Prince Imran from Malaysia said: “I am from Malaysia and it’s another sad occasion for our country, and for the airline.”

Queen Elizabeth then wished the competitors well.

“To you, the Commonwealth athletes, I send my good wishes for success in your endeavours.”

“It now gives me the greatest pleasure to declare the 20th Commonwealth Games open,” added the Queen.
