Sibu: The 2017 Victor Far East Malaysia Masters Championships dealt another huge blow as Rio Olympic silver medalists Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong have withdrawn from the tournament citing Tan Wee Kiong encountered muscle injuries during training sessions.
Despite their withdrawal, Malaysia’s men’s doubles coach Jeremy Gan said that the duo would still undergo regular training in Kuala Lumpur.
“There’s a little pain on Wee Kiong’s right arm, to avoid aggravating the pain, doctor has advised him to pull out from the tournament,” said Gan.
“They’ll continue to practice for the All England that will be held from March 7th to March 12,” added Gan.
Besides Goh/Tan, Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying have also decided to skip the tournament due to the fact that Goh Liu Ying has reinjured her knee and needed more time for healing.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s World No. 26 men’s pair of Teo Ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin also pulled out at the last minute as Ong Yew Sin’s grandfather has passed away.
Although the tournament will be played without Lee Chong Wei, Iskandar Zulkarnain along with shuttlers mentioned above, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) mentioned that 90% of the Malaysian shuttlers have already arrived in Sibu to get ready for the tournament that offered total prize money of USD120,000 (RM540,000).
