Kuala Lumpur: After World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei has decided not to participate in the Malaysia National Championships, it gave other Malaysian shuttlers the opportunity to become the first Malaysia National Championships champion.
The Malaysia National Championships that will be held from Feb 19 to Feb 25 at Dewan Sri Perdana Kolej Sains Bersekutu Sultan Azlan Shah in Ulu Kinta, Perak, was designed to replace the previously known National Circuit 1 and 2 and final tournaments.
BAM acting President Tan Sri Mohamed Al Amin Abdul Majid told reporters that the Malaysia National Championship will start its qualifying rounds from Feb 19 to 21 and the main draw from Feb 22 to 25.
“Since most of our higher ranked players were not able to play in the Circuit 1 and Circuit 2 tournaments in previous years, we’ve decided to make some changes in these tournaments going forward,” said Majid.
The newly named Malaysia National Championships offers monetary prize money of RM20, 000 for men’s singles champion, RM14, 000 for women’s singles champion, RM30, 000, Rm20, 000, RM20, 000 for men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles champions.
Olympic men’s doubles silver medalists Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong will be split up during the tournament. Goh will be paired with Teo Ee Yi while Tan Wee Kiong will partner Ong Yew Sin.
