KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei has issued a challenge to Malaysia’s national men’s singles players Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh to push beyond their limits and improve their performances ahead of the 2026 Thomas Cup in Denmark.
The Thomas Cup will take place in Horsens, Denmark from April 24 to May 3, and Malaysia is preparing to compete against strong teams including Japan, England, and Finland in Group B.
Lee Chong Wei Wants More Consistency
Speaking about the two players, Lee Chong Wei acknowledged that both Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh have shown potential but are still struggling with consistency in international tournaments.
Based on the current world rankings, Jun Hao, ranked world No. 23, is expected to lead Malaysia as the first men’s singles player, while Justin Hoh, ranked world No. 38, is likely to take the second singles position for the team.
Jun Hao was eliminated in the first round of the German Open but managed to reach the second round of the All England. Justin Hoh competed in the German Open, Swiss Open, and the Orléans Masters, with his best result being a second-round finish in the latter two tournaments.
Lee Chong Wei pointed out that Jun Hao has strong playing quality but struggles with fitness and consistency, especially in important matches.
He explained that Jun Hao often plays very well in early rounds but finds it difficult to handle crucial points in high-pressure matches. In addition, fitness levels appear to drop in later rounds, affecting overall performance.
Justin Hoh Showing Improvement
Lee Chong Wei noted that Justin Hoh has shown improvement and appears to be playing more mature badminton, but still needs more experience at the international level.
He emphasized that it is normal for young players to experience ups and downs in performance, but what matters most is continuous improvement, learning from defeats, and gaining more exposure in international competitions.
With the Thomas Cup approaching, both players are expected to play important roles for Malaysia’s men’s singles lineup.
Malaysia’s Thomas Cup Preparation
Malaysia has been drawn into Group B alongside Japan, England, and Finland, with Japan expected to be the strongest challenger for the top spot in the group.
Lee Chong Wei stressed that the coaching team must begin tactical planning early based on potential opponents, even before the official team lists are finalized.
He added that preparation and strategy planning are more important than worrying about match results at this stage, and the focus should be on readiness and performance.
Malaysia is expected to field players such as Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh, Aidil Sholeh, and Lee Zii Jia in the men’s singles events, while the men’s doubles team will likely include Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong / Tee Kai Wun, and Goh Sze Fei / Nur Izzuddin.
Japan has already announced their lineup, which includes top players such as Kodai Naraoka, Kenta Nishimoto, Yushi Tanaka, and Koki Watanabe, along with strong doubles pairs.
Focus on Preparation, Not Results
Lee Chong Wei emphasized that the team should focus on preparation and performance rather than worrying too much about winning or losing at this stage.
According to him, the most important thing for the players is whether they are willing to push beyond their limits and improve their performance when it matters most.
As the Thomas Cup approaches, Malaysian badminton fans will be hoping the team can deliver strong performances and challenge for the title.
