KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian badminton star Soh Wooi Yik has addressed speculation about his future with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) after fans noticed a change in his Instagram bio.

The men’s doubles specialist recently updated his profile description to “Pro Badminton Player,” which quickly sparked rumors among badminton fans that he might be planning to leave BAM and become an independent professional player.

However, the speculation appears to be unfounded. Soh Wooi Yik is still under contract with BAM until 2028, making any departure from the national setup highly unlikely at this time.

Instagram Bio Change Sparks Badminton Rumors

The simple bio change created a wave of discussion on social media, with some fans interpreting it as a signal that Wooi Yik was planning to leave the national badminton team structure.

In reality, the update is believed to simply reflect his status as a professional badminton athlete competing in international tournaments and the BWF World Tour.

Many professional athletes update their social media profiles to reflect their careers, and this move is seen as normal rather than an indication of any major change.

BAM Confirms Soh Wooi Yik Still With National Team

Malaysia men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi confirmed that Soh Wooi Yik remains part of the Badminton Association of Malaysia setup despite the online speculation.

He dismissed rumors that Wooi Yik would leave the national team to become an independent professional player, stating that the player is still fully committed to the national badminton program.

BAM has also not released any official statement suggesting any changes, and the focus remains on upcoming international badminton tournaments.

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik Preparing for Badminton Asia Championships

Soh Wooi Yik and his partner Aaron Chia continue to be Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair and are currently preparing to defend their title at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, from April 7 to April 12.

The pair face a challenging draw and are scheduled to open their campaign against Taiwan’s Chia Hsiang Chieh and Wang Chi Lin, currently ranked world No. 12.

If they progress, they could face rising Chinese pair Hu Ke Yuan and Lin Xiang Yi in the second round, followed by a potential quarter-final match against either Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi or Indonesia’s Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin.

A possible semi-final could see them face India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty or Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Shohibul Fikri before a potential final clash against Korea’s Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae.

Focus on Improvement and Upcoming Tournaments

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik previously lost to the Korean pair earlier this year at both the Malaysia Open and the All England in close three-set matches.

According to coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, the Malaysian pair will need to play an attacking game if they want to defeat the Korean pair in future matches.

For now, the focus remains on preparation and performance in upcoming badminton tournaments rather than social media speculation.
