Kuala Lumpur: At the Yonex Legends Vision press conference, where new members Saina Nehwal from India and Carolina Marin from Spain were introduced, Lee Chong Wei, who was accompanied by Chinese legend Lin Dan, conveyed optimism regarding Lee Zii Jia and Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik’s promising chances of securing titles on home turf.
Lee Chong Wei anticipates Lee Zii Jia and Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik should seize the opportunity to emerge victorious in the 2024 Malaysia Open set to unfold at the Axiata Arena, emphasizing the significance of the Malaysia Open and urging the Malaysian players not to disappoint the fans’ support.
Lee, a 12-time titleholder, based his expectations on the performance showcased by Lee Zii Jia and Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik in previous events. He stressed the importance of playing on home turf, highlighting the weight of expectations and the responsibility to give their best for their careers and the nation.
“I think Aaron-Wooi Yik and Zii Jia have a chance to advance to the Malaysian Open final. It is based on their condition and play. I have always said that the Malaysian Open was very important to me when I was a player,” said Lee.
“Why is it important to me? Because you are playing in your own place, your home, and the expectations are high for the supporters to come and support you. It is a heavy responsibility and you have to try your best for your career and country.”
“It’s OK for you to lose because they will understand. Don’t give up when your opponent takes the lead. I hope, at the Malaysian Open this time, not only Aaron-Wooi Yik and Zii Jia, but everyone actually has a chance to become champion.”
“However, I think the chances are higher for these two and I hope all the supporters can come and support,” said Lee.
Reflecting on the strong support of Malaysian fans, Lee also shared personal experiences of fans traveling great distances, even from places like Kuantan, to attend the Malaysia Open finals. He emphasized the emotional connection and responsibility players have to deliver their best despite challenges and encouraged them not to lose hope in the face of setbacks.
