Paris: In the men’s singles badminton group stage of the 2024 Paris Olympics, China’s top-seeded player Shi Yuqi won his opening match in Group A with a commanding 2-0 (21-5, 21-7) victory over Surinamese player Soren Opti.

Shi Yuqi, who has been in excellent form this season, is considered a strong contender for the men’s singles gold medal. This year, Shi Yuqi has won titles in India, France, Singapore, and Indonesia, and remained undefeated as the top singles player for China in the Thomas Cup, helping his team reclaim the title after six years.

Shi Yuqi’s international competition record for the year stands at 35 wins and 3 losses, boasting the highest winning percentage among players in the five badminton events. This stellar performance has propelled him to the world’s No. 1 ranking in men’s singles, marking a return to the top for Chinese men’s singles players after an eight-year hiatus. His opponent, Soren Opti, is currently ranked 274th in men’s singles.

In the first game, both players were evenly matched at the start. However, Shi Yuqi pulled ahead by scoring seven consecutive points, leading 11-3 at the technical timeout and eventually winning the game 21-5. The second game mirrored the first, with Shi Yuqi again taking an 11-3 lead before securing a 21-7 victory, thus winning the match 2-0.

Following this opening win at the Paris Olympics, Shi Yuqi will next face Italian player Giovanni Toti in the group stage. According to the qualification rules, only the top player from each singles group will advance to the knockout rounds.
