Hanoi: Former Malaysian women’s singles No. 1 Tee Jing Yi seemed rejuvenated and refreshed after switching her focus to women’s doubles.
Playing with Joyce Choong in their first international tournament, the unseeded pair continue their brilliant run at the $20,000 Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge in Hanoi, Vietnam as they booked their berth in the semi-finals on Friday.
Tee/Choong needed 40 minutes to dispatch Pitha Haningtyas Mentari/Virni Putri of Indonesia 21-15, 21-18 in their quarter-final match.
“We only practiced for a week before the tournament, I think we did pretty well so far,” said Tee.
However, a tough task will await Tee/Choong in the semi-finals as they are set to go up against the Indonesia/Malaysia pair and No. 3 seeds Ririn Amelia/Cheong Anna Ching Yik Saturday.
Malaysia’s independent men’s doubles pair Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Jagdish Singh were the other Malaysian survivors in Hanoi.
The world No. 8 seeds cruised past homesters Do Tuan Duc-Pham Hong Nam 21-12, 21-15 to play No. 5 seeds Trawut Potieng/Nanthakarn Yordphaisong of Thailand on Saturday.
