Meanwhile, World No. 9 mixed pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing of Malaysia were able to power past Joshua Hurlburt-Yu/Josephine Wu of Canada 21-16, 21-11 to set up second round meeting with No. 5 seeds Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia.
In women’s singles competition, the No. 1 seed Chen Yufei of China faced a tough challenge from Korea’s 17-year-old An Se Young before prevailing 14-21, 21-14, 21-15. Chen will play Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand on Thursday.
India’s badminton star PV Sindhu got the better of Zhang Beiwen of USA, as she defeated Zhang 21-14, 21-17 in 42 minutes.
Sindhu improved the head-to-head record to 6-4 after Wednesday’s victory. She will clash with Korean player Sung Ji Hyun in the second round.
