Basel: Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia, the men’s singles No. 1 seed at the 2024 Swiss Open, suffered a shocking defeat against Kidambi Srikanth of India in the second round.
Lee, currently ranked world no. 10, experienced a close call in the first round on Wednesday against Su Li-Yang of Chinese Taipei, eventually winning 21-19, 21-12. However, he was not as fortunate against the former World No. 1 from India, as Srikanth proved too strong for Lee, winning 21-16, 21-15.

Srikanth will play Lee Chia Hao of Chinese Taipei next. The unseeded Lee Chia Hao also pulled off an upset to down No. 7 seed Lakshya Sen of India 21-17, 21-15.
Malaysia has two mixed doubles and two men’s doubles pairs advancing to the quarter-finals.
Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei came back from 1-7 down in the first game to eventually win the game 21-17 over Sathish Kumar Karunakaran/Aadya Variyath of India. They will meet Supak Jomkoh/Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand in the next round.
Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai were made to work before coming out on top against Hiroki Nishi/Akari Sato of Japan 21-17, 19-21, 21-11. The No. 8 seeds Goh/Lai will take on No. 5 seeds Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje of Denmark in the final 8.
Both Malaysian men’s doubles pairs will meet pairs from Indonesia in the quarter-finals. No. 6 seeds Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun will play No. 3 seeds Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin, while Choong Hon Jian/Muhammad Haikal will fight Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani for a spot in the semi-finals.
