Basel: In an all-Malaysian mixed doubles final, Malaysia’s World No. 14 pair, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai, successfully clinched the 2024 Swiss Open title on Sunday.

Goh/Lai secured their victory with scores of 21-16, 21-13 in 37 minutes over compatriots and World No. 9 Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei, ending a six-year championship drought. Their last championship title dates back to winning the Singapore Open in July 2018.

Highlights of Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai vs. Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei in the 2024 Swiss Open final:

After being tied at 5-5 in the first game, Goh/Lai maintained their lead throughout the game and secured the first game 21-16. In the second game, after taking a 3-0 lead, Goh/Lai widened their advantage and ultimately cruised to victory with a final score of 21-13.

For Chen/Toh, their last championship win was at the Chinese Taipei Open in June 2023, and they failed to end a nine-month championship drought in the Swiss Open final. Nevertheless, this marks the second international title for the Malaysian team this year, with the men’s doubles pair Choong Hon Jian/Muhammad Haikal clinching the Orleans Masters title, also a Super 300 event last week.

Although the Indonesian team had chances of winning both the men’s doubles and women’s doubles, only the women’s doubles saved the day for their country.

The World No. 9 men’s doubles pair Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana were engaged in a thrilling final against World No. 21 Ben Lane/Sean Vendy of the UK. Unfortunately, luck was not on Fikri/Maulana’s side as they narrowly lost to Lane/Vendy 22-24, 26-28.

However, the World No. 32 women’s doubles pair Lanny Tria Mayasari/Ribka Sugiarto put up a strong fight to defeat World No. 24 Hsu Ya Ching/Lin Wan Ching of Taiwan 13-21, 21-16, 21-8.
